Course Preview
Stage 3 of Le Tour sets off from Amorebieta-Etxano and finishes 193.5 kilometres later in the French Basque Country. To be precise: in Bayonne. The route takes in four climbs, all in the first half.
Amorebieta is known for the Klasika Primavera, a single-day race that saw its last edition in 2019. Alejandro Valverde, Joaquim RodrĂguez, Carlos Sastre, Giovanni Visconti, Pello Bilbao, Andrey Amador and Carlos Betancur are some of the winners in Amorebieta.
The route of the 3rd stage is very straightforward. The riders cross the Côte de Trabakua (4.1 kilometres at 5.4%) and Côte de Milloi (2.3 kilometres at 4.5%) before continuing along the Bay of Biscay for 80 kilometres. The route is not entirely flat in this part of the race, as the Col d’Itziar (5.1 kilometres at 4.6%) and Côte de Benta (4.6 kilometres at 6.3%) are crested.
Approximately 15 kilometres after moving through San Sebastián the riders cross into France in Irún. The final hurdles of the day are a number of false flat sections inside the final 25 kilometres, which are unlikely to thwart a bunch sprint.
The finish location is Bayonne, a town at the confluence of the Nive and Adour rivers. Interestingly, the source of the Ardour is located high up the most climbed Tourcol, the Tourmalet.
