What a stunning conclusion to the 2023 edition of the oldest Classic on the French calendar. Christophe Laporte has taken a brilliant victory today in Paris-Tours, soloing to the finish line on the Avenue de Grammont in Tours after a tremendous display of strength and tactical intelligence in the closing kilometers.
The race unfolded in largely familiar fashion through the early hours, with the peloton content to let a breakaway group go up the road while the sprinters' teams kept a watchful eye on proceedings. The rolling terrain of the Sologne gave way to the more demanding roads of the Loir-et-Cher, and it was in the final stretch of the race where things truly came alive.
The Côtes, those short but punishing climbs that have so often been the decisive factor in Paris-Tours, did their usual damage. Riders were shaken out of position as teams jostled for control, and it was here that Laporte made his decisive move, launching an attack that caught his rivals off guard.
The Jumbo-Visma man proved simply too strong for those who tried to follow him, and he rode the final kilometers with impressive composure, never looking in danger of being caught by the chasers behind him. It was a commanding performance from a rider who has developed into one of the very best classics specialists in the peloton.
For Laporte, this represents a career-defining victory on one of cycling's most storied stages.
