What a day of racing in the Belgian classics opener. The peloton faced brutal conditions from the gun, with cold winds and threatening skies making life miserable for the riders as they tackled the famous climbs and cobbled sectors of East Flanders.
Lotte Kopecky put on an absolute masterclass to take victory in the women's race, the defending champion proving once again why she is the queen of this event. The SD Worx rider was simply in a class of her own when it mattered most, timing her effort to perfection on the final climb to distance her rivals and cross the line alone. It was a commanding display of strength and tactical intelligence from the Belgian champion racing in front of her home crowds.
In the men's race, it was Wout van Aert who showed his class in the closing kilometers. The Jumbo-Visma powerhouse used his explosive finishing speed to great effect, navigating the frantic and dangerous finale that saw several riders go close to threatening his victory. Van Aert demonstrated once again that he is one of the most complete riders in the peloton, capable of winning in a variety of ways across the cobbled classics.
The Molenberg, Wijnpers and Berendries all played their roles in whittling down the front group throughout the afternoon, with attacks coming from all directions as teams tried to outmaneuver one another. The racing was aggressive and relentless, as you would expect from this opening weekend of the Belgian spring classics season.
