What a race. Remco Evenepoel came into Liège-Bastogne-Liège as the defending champion, looking to become the first rider in decades to successfully defend the title at La Doyenne, and he delivered a performance that left the peloton breathless on the roads of the Ardennes.
The race unfolded in dramatic fashion over the brutally hard finale, with the legendary climbs of La Redoute and La Roche aux Faucons doing their usual damage to the peloton. It was on the Côte de la Roche aux Faucons where things truly exploded, as attacks flew and the leading group began to splinter under the pressure of racing.
Evenepoel showed his class in the closing stages, riding with a maturity and composure that belied his young age. The Belgian champion timed his effort perfectly, accelerating away from his rivals and putting time into the chasers as he pushed toward the finish in Liège. Behind him, a group of exhausted competitors battled for the remaining podium positions.
Tadej Pogačar, who had been one of the most dangerous threats throughout the day, could not match Evenepoel's finishing punch and had to settle for a place on the podium. Quinten Hermans delivered a stunning ride to claim a spot among the top finishers, giving Belgian cycling even more reason to celebrate on home roads.
In the end, Evenepoel crossed the line with his arms raised, writing his name into the history books once again on the roads of his home country.
