What a finale to the 2023 Itzulia Basque Country. Stage 6 delivered everything that was expected and more, as the race came to a dramatic conclusion atop the brutal Muro de Ietxasmendi climb in Arrate, crowning a worthy overall champion.
Remco Evenepoel came into the final stage with the overall lead, but the Belgian was under enormous pressure from Primoz Roglic and the Jumbo-Visma team, who had been hunting him throughout the week. From the very early kilometres it was clear that this would be no processional final stage, as attacks flew on the roads of the Basque Country in what became a highly animated race.
Jumbo-Visma set about making the race as hard as possible, using their collective strength to push the pace and test Evenepoel at every opportunity. The Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl rider, however, showed tremendous composure and resilience, responding to every move and refusing to crack under the sustained pressure.
On the final ascent to Arrate, the real battle began in earnest. Roglic launched his anticipated attack, driving hard up the steep gradients in a bid to crack his rival and take back the seconds he needed. Evenepoel dug deep and showed the kind of climbing performance that has defined his 2023 season, limiting his losses with great courage and intelligence.
In the end, Remco Evenepoel secured the overall victory at the Itzulia Basque Country, adding another prestigious stage race title to his rapidly growing palmares and announcing himself once again as one of the very best stage racers in the peloton.
