What a dramatic day in the Basque hills as the 2023 Itzulia Basque Country delivered another thrilling stage finish. The fifth stage proved to be one of the most action-packed days of racing this week, with attackers testing each other from the early kilometers and the peloton facing a brutally demanding route that whittled the leading group down to only the strongest climbers.
A breakaway group went clear early in the stage, as is so often the case in this race, and they built up a reasonable advantage over the peloton for much of the day. However, the teams of the overall contenders were never willing to let things get out of hand, and the gap was carefully managed as the race moved toward the crucial finishing climb.
It was on the final ascent that the real racing began in earnest. Attacks flew from multiple directions as riders probed for weaknesses, and the group rapidly fragmented under the intense pace being set. The climbers who had been lurking throughout the week finally had their chance to show what they were made of on these punishing Basque gradients.
Primoz Roglic, ever the master of these roads and this race in particular, proved once again why he is so feared in this part of the world. The Jumbo-Visma leader timed his effort to perfection on the final climb, putting in a devastating acceleration that his rivals simply could not match. He crossed the line to take a commanding stage victory, further cementing his hold on the overall classification and sending a powerful message to his rivals ahead of the final stage tomorrow.
