What a day in the Basque Country as the peloton tackled a demanding stage that once again showcased the brutal nature of this race. The day's route put the climbers firmly in the spotlight, and the action did not disappoint from start to finish.
A breakaway group went clear in the early kilometres, as is typical in this race, and the escapees were allowed a reasonable gap by the peloton for much of the day. However, with the final climbs looming, the teams of the general classification contenders began to assert their control and the gap came down steadily as the race entered its decisive phase.
The final climb proved to be the launchpad for the key attacks of the day. Remco Evenepoel, who has been in superb form throughout this week, once again demonstrated his class by putting in a powerful acceleration that split the front group and put him clear of most of his rivals. The Belgian champion showed no signs of weakness and rode with the kind of authority that has made him one of the most exciting riders in the peloton.
Primoz Roglic, racing on home roads in front of passionate Basque crowds, again showed that he is far from a spent force and finished strongly to limit any time losses. The battles between the top general classification contenders continued to shape the overall standings.
As the stage concluded, Evenepoel strengthened his grip on the overall lead, setting up what promises to be a thrilling final few days of racing in this spectacular region of Spain.
