What a stunning day of racing in the Basque Country as Remco Evenepoel claimed a dominant victory on Stage 3 of the Itzulia Basque Country. The Belgian champion put in a masterclass performance to take the stage win and move into a strong position in the overall classification.
The stage proved to be a demanding test from the outset, with the typical Basque terrain throwing up relentless climbs and technical descents that kept the peloton on high alert throughout the day. The breakaway group worked hard for much of the stage, building up a reasonable advantage over the peloton before the race organizers and the teams with general classification ambitions began to take control.
As the race approached its decisive final climb, the peloton had reeled in the escapees and the real battle for the stage began in earnest. The climbers began to make their moves, with the elastic in the peloton beginning to stretch and eventually snap as the gradient kicked up sharply.
It was Evenepoel who proved to be in a class of his own on the final ascent, attacking with conviction and riding away from his rivals with an impressive display of climbing power. The Soudal Quick-Step rider pushed all the way to the line, crossing it alone to take a well-deserved victory.
Behind him, the other general classification contenders fought out the remaining time gaps, with the day's result reshaping the overall standings heading into the remaining stages of this exciting race.
