2023 Itzulia Basque Country Stage 2 Results & Recap
Stage 2 of the 2023 Itzulia Basque Country is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.
Race Recap
The peloton tackled a demanding stage through the Basque hills today, and it was Remco Evenepoel who emerged victorious, claiming a stunning solo win to take the race lead. The Soudal Quick-Step rider attacked on the final climb and rode away from his rivals with characteristic authority, crossing the line alone to the delight of the roadside spectators.
The stage was animated from the outset, with an early breakaway group going up the road and building a reasonable advantage over the chasing peloton. The escapees worked well together and it appeared for much of the day that they might be in contention for the stage win, but the GC teams gradually wound up the pace as the race approached its decisive final passages.
The real race began in earnest on the punishing final climb, where Evenepoel made his decisive move. The Belgian champion accelerated clear of the group of favourites and quickly established a gap that none of his rivals could close. Behind him, there was a fierce battle for the remaining podium places, with riders like Primož Roglič and others among the leading contenders fighting hard to limit their losses.
Evenepoel's margin of victory was convincing, and his performance sends a clear message to the rest of the field. He now sits at the top of the general classification and looks in outstanding form heading into the remaining stages of the race. His team will be confident of protecting the lead over the days to come.
