The opening stage of the 2023 Itzulia Basque Country delivered exactly the kind of dramatic finish that fans of this race have come to expect, with a summit finish atop Arrate providing the perfect setting for the first major battle of the week.
Remco Evenepoel of Soudal Quick-Step announced his intentions in no uncertain terms, taking victory on the climb to claim the first leader's jersey of the race. The Belgian champion attacked with authority in the closing kilometres of the ascent, proving that his form coming into this race is sharp and that he will be a serious contender throughout the week.
The stage itself featured a challenging parcours that tested the riders from the very first kilometres, with the Basque roads living up to their fearsome reputation. The peloton stayed largely together through the early part of the race before the true contenders began to assert themselves as the road tilted upward on the final climb.
Behind Evenepoel, several of the other general classification favourites arrived in close proximity, with small time gaps already beginning to open up between the key names. The likes of Primoz Roglic and others showed they too are in solid condition, though Evenepoel's finishing burst was simply too strong for anyone to match on the day.
It was a statement ride from the reigning Vuelta a España champion, who now leads the overall classification heading into what promises to be several more days of intense and unpredictable racing through the Basque Country.
