Race Recap

The roads of Lombardy delivered another stunning edition of the Monument known as the Race of the Falling Leaves, with Tadej Pogacar once again proving himself to be in a class of his own on the climbs of the Italian lake district.

From the outset, the race followed a familiar pattern of attritional climbing, with the peloton gradually being whittled down as the roads rose into the hills around Lake Como. Early breakaway groups were eventually absorbed as the serious contenders began to assert themselves on the key climbs of the day.

The decisive moment came when Pogacar attacked on the Madonna del Ghisallo, the iconic climb that has graced so many chapters of Lombardia history. His accelerations were devastating, and one by one the chasers were dropped, unable to match the Slovenian's explosive power on the steep gradients.

Pogacar soloed to victory with the kind of authority that has become his trademark on these punishing Italian roads, crossing the finish line in Bergamo with his arms aloft, savoring another Monument victory added to what is already becoming a legendary palmares.

Behind him, the remaining contenders battled hard for the remaining podium positions, but the race for victory had long since been decided by the time the leaders reached the final kilometers.

It was a breathtaking performance from the UAE Team Emirates leader, and yet another reminder of just how dominant he has become in the sport's biggest one-day races.
