Race Recap
Santiago Buitrago wins queen stage of the Giro d'Italia
Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious) claimed victory on stage 19 of the Giro d'Italia from the day's breakaway ahead of Derek Gee (Israel Premier Tech) in the closing kilometres of the 183km journey from Longarone to Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Gee (Israel-PremierTech) had to once again be content with his fourth second place at this Giro. The Canadian was leading solo, but faded on the final climb, allowing the Colombian to capitalize on the Cima Coppi climb, the highest point in this year's Giro.
In the general classification race, Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) was aggressive on the Tre Cime and took back three seconds from pink jersey leader Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers). Heading into tomorrow's uphill finish, the Slovenian is now 26 seconds behind Thomas.
"It was OK when I went at 400m, but I realised after 100m that 400 is a long way at this altitude. I just tried to pace it. I lost a couple of seconds on the line but it was nice to gain some time on João [Almeida]. It's going to be super close tomorrow," Thomas said after the stage. "I think it's going to be exciting to watch (the time trial), horrible to do."
