Zana wins stage 18

Filippo Zana (Team Jayco-AIUla) won stage 18 of the Giro d'Italia after outsprinting Thibaut Pinot (Groupama - FDJ) on the summit of Val di Zoldo. Warren Barguil (Team Arkéa - Samsic) finished third, 50 seconds behind.\n \n“I stuck on Pinot’s wheel in the last kilometres because it’s one of the few times when I was in a sprint like that so I had to hope I had something left in the finale. There were only two of us left, though, so I had a 50% chance," Zana said after the stage.

Thomas protected his lead in the overall competition by staving off the pressure put on by Roglic and his Jumbo Visma squad in the closing kilometres of the race, however second place João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) dropped to third on GC at the end of the stage after failing to find the legs to stay with his two top rivals. Thomas now leads by 29 seconds over Roglic. Almeida is a further 39 seconds behind.

“It was a decent day - I gained time on Almeida and didn’t get dropped by Primož,” Thomas said. “Primož likes to go easy and take it hard, take it easy and go hard, so I didn’t know how he’d be going in the last two kilometres. But he was super-strong, so I was happy with how it went.”

“It’s nice to have a bigger advantage on João, but Primož had a bad day on stage 16, João today,” Thomas said. “So I have to go on being consistent.”

Possibly the hardest route of the entire Giro is saved until Stage 19. The route ascends to an elevation of 2,000 metres in the first half to serve five giant peaks in the second. The race adds up to 183 kilometres, while the finish line is situated on Tre Cime di Lavaredo.
