Almeida wins stage 16
João Almeida (UAD) outsprinted Geraint Thomas (IGD) in the final metres of stage 16 of Giro d'Italia to take his first ever grand tour stage win after 199km of one of the hardest and longest stages at the Giro this year. The Welshman's second-place result on the day atop Monte Bondone puts the 37-year-old into the maglia rosa 11 seconds ahead of the Portuguese best young rider.
"I'm super-happy, it's a dream come true," Almeida said. "After four years [at the Giro] I was always so far and so close at the same time. Finally I got it so yeah I'm super, super happy."
The GC group of climbing favorites eventually caught and passed the early break of 27 that began falling apart during the penultimate climb and from there it was all guns blazing as João Almeida (UAD) attacked leaving only Thomas able to cling on his wheel. Primož Roglič (TJV) was left to pick up the pieces and ended up 29 seconds behind Thomas at the end of the stage.
The 17th stage is the flattest of the entire Giro d’Italia. In fact, the route decends gradually from Pergine Valsugana in the Alps to Caorle on the Adriatic Sea. A bunch sprint is next to certain after 197 kilometres of action.\n
