Update: The owners of the race have shortened the stage a second time due to road conditions. The stage is now about 74.8 kilometers, with the first half of the original stage removed. The brutal Croix de Coeur is still included, while the finish climb adds up to 13.1 kilometres.

Crans-Montana hosted its last stage finish of a major cycling contest ten years ago. Bauke Mollema climbed to victory on the Tour de Suisse. The Dutchman finished 11 seconds ahead of a chase group featuring among others Thibaut Pinot and the late Michele Scarponi.

The route from Villete to Crans-Montana is fairly straightforward. The riders start at the foot of the Croix de Coeur, which is a giant: 15.4 kilometres long and averaging 8.8%. The last 4 kilometres go up at 10.3%.

The route then descends to Riddes and 23 kilometres on the flat later the finish climb kicks in. The ascent to ski resort Crans-Montana is 13.1 kilometres long and averages 7.2%.
