Evenepoel wins stage 1 of the Giro d'Italia
Remco Evenepoel (SOQ) stormed to victory in the opening stage of the Giro d'Italia today in Ortona, winning the 19.8km time trial with a time of 21:18 ahead of Filippo Ganna (IGD). Ganna finished 22 seconds behind the Belgian champion, and João Almeida (UAD) finished third.
"I'm super happy. It's the best result we can get," Evenepoel said. "I said in the bus that I thought it would be 21:30 to win, and in the end it was 21:18 so I was quite close to my guess. I felt from the start in a good rhythm, always the same gear, same cadence."
"I'm not really focusing on the time gaps," Evenepoel said. "I just wanted to try to win the stage and in the end we won it, so mission one accomplished."
