The 2023 Giro d'Italia promises to be one of the most compelling editions of the Italian Grand Tour in recent memory, with a challenging route and a stellar cast of riders set to battle over three weeks and more than 3,400 kilometres of racing across the length of the Italian peninsula.
The race gets underway with a short opening time trial in the Abruzzo region, setting the tone for what promises to be a relentlessly demanding three weeks. The early stages will offer opportunities for the sprinters before the race moves into genuinely brutal mountain terrain, featuring multiple summit finishes and high-altitude passes that will test the best climbers in the world.
The route includes crossings of some of cycling's most iconic climbs, with the Dolomites expected to play a decisive role in shaping the final general classification. Stage organisers RCS Sport have once again constructed a parcours that rewards pure climbing ability and tactical intelligence in equal measure.
Primoz Roglic enters the race as a strong favourite having shown dominant form in stage racing over the past several seasons. The Slovenian Jumbo-Visma leader has unfinished business at the Giro following previous near misses and will be supported by one of the deepest and most powerful teams in the peloton.
Geraint Thomas brings considerable Grand Tour experience and the backing of Ineos Grenadiers, a team that knows how to manage a three-week race better than almost any other outfit in the sport.
Remco Evenepoel, the reigning Vuelta a Espana champion, arrives with enormous confidence and will be eager to demonstrate that his abilities translate to the toughest mountain stages the Giro can offer.
Jay Hindley, the 2022 champion, cannot be discounted, nor can a host of other talented climbers who will look to exploit any weakness among the favourites on the steepest roads.
