What a day in the Belgian classics. Gent-Wevelgem delivered everything fans could have hoped for, with Mathieu van der Poel claiming a stunning victory in what was a truly dominant performance from the Alpecin-Deceuninck rider.
Van der Poel proved once again why he is one of the most feared riders in the peloton on days like this. The Dutchman attacked on the final ascent of the Kemmelberg and simply rode away from his rivals, crossing the line solo with his arms raised in celebration. It was a display of raw power and tactical intelligence that left his competitors with absolutely no answer.
Behind him, the sprint for second place produced a frantic finish. Wout van Aert, who had been active throughout the day for Jumbo-Visma, came home to claim the runner-up spot, with Christophe Laporte completing a strong day for the team in third. It was a bittersweet result for Van Aert, who will undoubtedly be looking for revenge in the coming weeks of the spring campaign.
The race itself was animated early, with a large breakaway group going clear and staying away for much of the afternoon. The crosswinds across the Flemish countryside caused some nervous moments in the peloton, though no significant splits materialized to change the overall picture of the race.
As the race headed into its final kilometers and the decisive climbs came thick and fast, it became clear this was van der Poel's day entirely.
