Race Recap
Alaphilippe wins stage 2
Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal - QuickStep) came out of nowhere on a hilly 167.5-kilometre stage 2 to give France its second victory in two days at the Critérium du Dauphiné. The late charge from the former world champ gave him his first world tour win in over a year. Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) took second after winding it up early, but fading in the closing metres and Trek-Segafredo’s Natnael Tesfatsion finished third at La Chase Dieu.
"It was a tough victory to get,” Alaphilippe said. "These last few months have been tough, but we’ve worked hard and got back to where we wanted. It’s a relief.
"I was surprised to be up there because first we were working for [teammate] Ethan Vernon, but in the end it was too tough for him, so we could have gone with Florian Sénechal, but with a kilometre to go Florian told me he was already going all out. I had good legs, so I went for it instead."
"Now the win’s in the bag, that’s great news," he went on to say. "I can take the rest of the week a bit more calmly and see what more I can do."
Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma) retained his yellow and blue leaders jersey after finishing fourth on the day. Laporte enjoyed an incredible lead out from teammate and Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard for the second day in a row. \n
