Race Recap
Laporte wins opening stage
Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma) took the first win of the Criterium du Dauphine after a bumpy and slippery opening 151km stage that saw the remaining rider of an early breakaway get caught right at the line. Matteo Trentin (UAE Team Emirates) was second and Rune Herregodts (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty), in a desperate bid to take the stage, ended up in third place after spending all day in the breakaway.
"It was a difficult and nervous stage,” Laporte said. "The last descent was dangerous, especially with Herregodts still in front. But the team kept Jonas and me in the lead. I got the chance today, and I have to thank my teammates for that. Jonas' lead-out was fantastic. This is an excellent start to the week for the team.”
Tomorrow's stage will be much like today's, as the riders travel from Brassac-les-Mines to La Chaise-Dieu on the second day of the Critérium du Dauphiné. The lumpy route is 167.3 kilometres long and serves an altitude gain of almost 2,900 metres.
