Race Recap
Groves wins stage 11
Kaden Groves (BEX) showed his rivals a clean pair of heels today on one of the longest stages of the Vuelta a Espana, sprinting to victory ahead of Danny Van Poppel (BOH) and Tim Merlier (ADC). It was a tight finish, however the Australian proved himself the fastest on the day.
"It feels fantastic," Groves said. "This morning, with the news of Simon [Yates] being positive for Covid, all the boys were pretty disappointed, and this is the best way to bounce back after such bad news. I really have to celebrate but I also wish he was here because he’s part of this team. I’m really happy. I have to thank all the guys, we’ve been riding all day and we set up early for this win. With crosswind in the last 4km, the guys did a perfect job to put me in the front fresh. Being my first Grand Tour win, it sure takes the cake. It’s been a really good year and I’m super happy to get a win here and there are two more stages [for the sprinters]. We sure plan to win!"
Remco Evenepoel (QST) retains the overall jersey, 2'41 ahead of Primož Roglič (TJV).
"It’s definitely not a beautiful day like we hoped for [with Julian Alpahilippe crashing out of the race]," he said. "I don’t know yet what happened and what the results are. It’s definitely a big loss for our team, especially on a quiet stage. It’s quite a pity. I hope he does well and he’s not suffering too much. I wish all the best for Loulou. Julian was doing really well in a lot of stages but I think we are not the only team losing guys. It’s a pity that we lose the world champion because he was in really good shape. I have confidence in my other teammates also and I’m sure they will do very well in the coming stages."\n
