Evenepoel storms to victory in mid-tour TT

Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team) crushed his competition in stage 10's flat individual time trial to Alicante, beating closest rival Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) by an astounding 48 seconds over 40km. Evenepoel's time of 33'18 unseated his teammate Rémi Cavagna (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team), who finished third behind Roglic after spending the majority of the race in the hot seat.

"48 seconds [on Primoz Roglic]? That’s a big surprise," Evenepoel said. "I saw that my teammate Rémi [Cavagna] did really well. It was perfect that he did such a good time trial for me to know good times. When I was sitting in the bus, I could see that everybody was actually slowing down in the second part compared to his time. I knew I just had to push all the time because it was flat with a super hard finish. And my legs were so heavy on this last climb. It was actually really hard. But it’s super nice to win this time trial in the red jersey. It’s an amazing feeling. I knew it was gonna be a super fast time trial. I’m just so happy to take the stage win. I think I achieved my dream. And now we’re gonna fight and we’re gonna try to win this Vuelta. The pressure is off. I won a stage. Now the whole team is super confident. Everybody is performing so well. Now we just have to fight to keep this jersey and take it home."

Evenepoel now leads the overall competition by a huge 2'41 ahead of Roglic, who leapfrogged into second, pushing Enric Mas (Movistar Team) into third.
