The 2022 Vuelta a España opens with a team time trial of 23.7 kilometres in Utrecht, the Netherlands. The route is as flat as an ice skating rink.

The Spanish Grand Tour kicks off with a team time trial, so it is back to the familiar routine, which ended in 2019. That year’s TTT around the saltmarshes of Torrevieja was won by Astana, which catapulted Miguel Angel López into the red jersey.

The race starts and finishes near the Jaarbeurs. The first kilometres of the route run through the city centre before the teams continue to Overvecht, a post-war neighborhood in the northern part of Utrecht. Via two new neighbourhoods on the western side, Leidsche Rijn and De Meern, the TTT returns to the Jaarbeurs.

Hosting the Grand Depart of the 2015 Tour de France, Jaarbeurs is an exhibition and conference centre right next to ‘Utrecht Centraal’, the central railway station for the city. Back then, Rohan Dennis claimed the first yellow jersey after blitzing a short individual test against the clock.
