The penultimate stage on the Volta a Catalunya goes from one coastal place to the next. The race sets off from Salou and finishes in Cambrils. The distance is 167.6 kilometres, while the elevation gain adds up to 3,013 metres.

The shortest route from the start to the finish is 6 kilometres long, but the riders take a lumpy detour and move through the regions Priorat, Baix Camp and Tarragonès, while also visiting the Prades Mountains and the Serra de Montsant mountain range.

The route climbs twice to an elevation of almost 1,000 metres in the first half of the race. The first summit is the Coll de les Llebres Mussara, which is a 17.8 kilometres climb at 4.3%. After a short descent and a rolling section the Coll de Capafonts appears. This is an ascent of 3.6 kilometres with an average gradient of 6.1%.

On roads that are either going up or down – but never steep – the riders head back towards the coast. With almost 30 kilometres remaining they crest the Coll de la Teixeta (5.8 kilometres at 4.1%) before continuing downhill to a flat run-in to the finish line.

The last time that the Volta a Catalunya visited Salou was in 2007. Caisse d’Epargne – now Movistar – won the team trial with start and finish in the town on the Costa Daurada. The last stage finish in Cambrils happened in 2006, when Luis Pérez Rodríguez stayed 12 seconds ahead of the charging peloton.
