Matthews wins stage 1

Michael Matthews (BEX) sprinted to victory on stage 1 of the Volta a Catalunya, winning the stage ahead of Sonny Colbrelli (TBV) and Quentin Pacher (GFC). The 171km route ended with an uphill bunch sprint, where Matthews took his first win in four years.

“It’s been a long time,” Matthews said after the race. “You can see how much this means to the team. It’s been a long time without a victory for me now, so to come back to a finish that I knew well from a couple of years ago (Matthews also won at Saint Feliu de Guixols in 2019) to now win again, means so much.

“My wife and my dog are here to support me, it’s so nice to be able to cross the finish line and give my wife a massive hug. It just means so much.

“This course suits me quite well. A hard race, and then an uphill sprint to the finish…knowing the finish from a couple of years ago also helped me.”

The 2nd stage of the Volta a Catalunya sets off from L’Escala, a place close to the French border, and finishes in Perpignan in the south of France. The route adds up to 202.4 kilometres.\n
