Houle wins in Foix

Hugo Houle (IPT) won today's stage of the Tour de France after a solo attack out of the breakaway in between two Cat. 1 climbs, Port de Lers and Mur de Péguère, and stayed away to take an emotional victory for his late brother. Valentin Madouas and Michael Wood, another Canadian, took second and third about 30 seconds behind.

“I never won a race," Houle said. "I guess it was the right place to win my first race! I attacked to set it up for Michael Woods. I went full gas. I hanged on and suffered in the steep climb. I knew that with 30’’ or 40’’ lead at the top, I could do it. It was still a long time to go with an advantage of only 20’’ but I never gave up. In the technical sectors, I gained some time. I was afraid to cramp towards the. I missed some food because I had no assistance car in the last 20km. To win a race was a dream I had for my brother who dies ten years ago. I’ve worked for him for years, it’s incredible. I don’t know what to say.”

Jonas Vingegaard retained the yellow jersey after he neutralised Tadej Pogacar’s attacks on the penultimate climb.
