Pidcock wins on Alpe d'Huez

Thomas Pidcock (IGD) won stage 12 of the Tour de France in commanding fashion today, winning on the Alpe d'Huez ahead of South Africa’s Louis Meintjes. Chris Froome rounded out the podium in third after an inspired ride from the four-time Tour champion. The Brit becomes the youngest winner on Alpe d'Huez at 22 years old.

“I guess that stage win at L’Alpe d’Huez for my first Tour de France, it’s not bad! Pidcock said. "The idea was to get in the breakaway. I lost enough time yesterday to begin having some freedom. After the Galibier, I got away on the descent, knowing that no one would take the risk to follow me. Chris Froome did. It was pretty nice to get across with him. We worked well together. He’s a legend! Maybe he’s not as fast as he was but he’s still Chris Froome. It worked out perfectly to break away with him. This win is certainly one of my best moments in cycling, with people’s flags… You can’t experience that anywhere else than at L’Alpe d’Huez.”

Jonas Vingegaard (TJV) remains in yellow after several unsuccessful blows from Tadej Pogačar (UAD) on the final climb.

“After what happened yesterday, I wasn’t 100% confident but I felt good today. I expected Jumbo-Visma to control the race this way. They have a very good team for that. Well, I tried to attack, but Jonas never counter-attacked. I would have preferred that so I could have responded. He simply followed me and I wasn’t strong enough to drop him off. I know what happened yesterday and it won’t happen again. I spent too much energy on the ascent to the Galibier. It’s up to me to attack now. Jonas is impressive but I’ll put everything I have in the battle.”
