What a day in Tuscany. The white roads of Siena delivered once again, serving up a brutal, beautiful race that will be talked about for years to come.
Tadej Pogacar put on an absolutely dominant display to win the 2022 edition of Strade Bianche, soloing to victory in Siena's Piazza del Campo in a performance that left his rivals completely helpless. The Slovenian superstar attacked on the penultimate gravel sector, Monte Sante Marie, with around 50 kilometers still to race, and simply nobody could follow. From that moment, the race was essentially over.
The parcours did its usual work early, whittling down the peloton across the succession of dusty white gravel sectors that define this race. The heat was a factor throughout, with temperatures climbing well above seasonal norms, turning the day into an almost suffocating test of endurance on top of everything else.
Mathieu van der Poel was present and visible for much of the race, as was Tom Pidcock, and for a while it seemed as though the race might come down to a group of elite classics specialists. But when Pogacar lit the fuse on Monte Sante Marie, the elastic simply snapped for everyone. There was no negotiation, no hesitation. He just rode away.
Behind him, a chase group worked together but could never seriously threaten to close the gap. Pogacar arrived at the finish line in the famous medieval square with his arms raised, the gap behind him emphatic and telling.
