Roglič wins Paris Nice, Simon Yates victorious final day
Primož Roglič (TJV) took home the yellow jersey after a fierce battle with Simon Yates on the final climb of the Sun's Race. From a small group of GC favorites, Yates launched his final move less than 20km from the finish, putting Jumbo Visma on the back foot the entire way to Nice. He ended up crossing the line 9 seconds ahead of Roglic and Wout Van Aert.
"It never goes without a bit drama," Roglic said after the race. "It was a super hard last one, but I have to say I'm happier than last year! And I have to say a big thanks to my whole team! We saw they’re half human, half motor, Wout [Van Aert] can do everything! I was definitely not strong enough [to do it alone today]. I was really suffering and fighting over the climb. Luckily, I knew Wout had a super day. He was really a big big help going with me to the finish."
Yates said he was happy with how things turned out, despite not overturning the GC result in the end. The Bike Exchange climber had to be content with second place overall, 29 seconds behind Roglic. Daniel Felipe Martinez Poveda (IGD) had a fantastic ride to take third, +2:37 back.
"I think the GC was too far away, to that much time would have been a really big ask, so I’m very happy with the stage win," Yates said. "The overall victory is always in the back of your mind when you open gaps, but I knew I’d lose time on the downhill. I’m not a big guy, it was a difficult task against the two guys behind. The conditions were difficult but I’ve had experience here in the rain, so I was prepared. Of course, I’m happy to be on the podium. I have two second places here. Maybe one day I’ll come back to win, but I’m happy with my results."\n
