Démare wins stage 5
Arnaud Démare (Groupama - FDJ) won stage 5 of the Giro d'Italia after outsprinting Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates) and Giacomo Nizzolo (Israel - Premier Tech) in Messina.
“The climb was difficult, we expected it,” said Demare. “I lost a lot of time but the guys did a great job. We know what we are capable of. In cycling, it’s sometimes difficult to put things in place, but you have to know how to persevere.”
Juan Pedro López (Trek - Segafredo) remains in the pink jersey, the Spaniard also leads the best young rider competition. Lennard Kämna (Bora - Hansgrohe) is the leader of the King of the Mountains competition and Arnaud Démare (Groupama - FDJ) is atop the standings of the sprint competition.
