Covi takes stage win, Hindley moves into pink
Alessandro Covi (UAE Team Emirates) took a solo win today in the Dolomites after spending the day in the breakaway. The Italian saw glory after a 50km alone, holding off a late attack from Domen Novak (Bahrain-Victorious), who got within 30 seconds of Covi. Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo) finished in third.
In the close fight for the maglia rosa, Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe) finally cracked Richard Carapaz (Ineos) on the final climb to Passo Fedaia. The Australian eventually crossed the line 1'25 ahead of Carapaz, all but sealing his victory in this year's edition. Mikel Landa sits in third place, 1'51" down.
“I knew this was going to be the crucial stage of the race and this finish was brutal, if you had the legs you could make the difference,” Hindley said. “We stayed patient and saved our matches for today. It was perfect, Lenny was in the breakaway and he couldn’t have timed it better to drop back and give me a boost up the road. When I heard Carapaz was dropping the wheel I just went all out. It was an epic stage.”
