Race Recap
Yates wins stage 14
Simon Yates (Team BikeExchange - Jayco) took a solo win after a disappointing stage 9 where he lost 11 minutes and fell out of GC contention. The Briton attacked with five kilometres to go and held off Jai Hindley (Bora - Hansgrohe), Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) and Vincenzo Nibali (Astana Qazaqstan Team) to win by a handful of seconds in Turin after an action-packed stage.
“I tried a few times in the beginning but it was not possible,” Yates said. “I made a couple of moves, but maybe the group was too big, or I was not allowed to go, I dunno. So we had to change tactics. Not to put a downer on the day, but I came here to win the race, so for me, it’s another stage, I have five already, and this is number six. I hope the legs stay as good as today. Today was a really, really big effort, not just for me but for everybody. I think the gaps today, they’re enormous. If this heat stays around it’s going to be a very hard final week.”
Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) took over the maglia rosa after a strong showing in the latter part of the stage. The Ineos rider attacked in the final 30km and forced the final move that cracked many GC riders, including the maglia rosa, Juan Pedro LĂłpez (Trek - Segafredo).
