Girmay claims historic win
Biniam Girmay (IWG) took an historic victory today after a hectic finale as the first Black African to win a stage at the Giro d'Italia. Girmay outsprinted Mathieu Van Der Poel (AFC) after a long hot 196km day from Pescara to Jesi. Vincenzo Albanese (EOK) finished third in a reduced field that was decimated after a series of steep unclassified climbs punctuated the end of the stage.
“All the team was working all day, including the GC riders, and they did a great job,” Girmay said. “We knew when we started we knew we had possibilities to win a stage. I am thankful and happy that I was able to pay back the team for a win.”
Juan Pedro LĂłpez (TFS) remains in the pink jersey for another day, and will likely hold onto it again tomorrow, as it's a pan flat stage designed for the fastmen.
