Van Der Poel wins first stage of Giro d'Italia
Mathieu Van Der Poel (AFC) won the opening stage of the Giro d'Italia after an uphill mass gallop to the line. Biniam Girmay (IWG) took second and Pello Bilbao (TBV) rounded out the podium in third place. The Dutchman starts tomorrow's stage four seconds ahead of Biniam Girmay (IWG).
"I never did a sprint like that before, I was on the limit. I'm really happy with this result. Van der Poel was the strongest today but I will try again on Sunday," Girmay said after the stage.
