2022 Giro di Sicilia Stage 3 Results & Recap
Stage 3 of the 2022 Giro di Sicilia is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.

Fran Miholjevic surprisingly won the third stage of the Giro di Sicilia 2022. The rider of the Cycling Team Friuli was able to slip into the first breakaway of the day and resist the return of the group once he was alone. Thanks to a masterful test, the Croatian rider also went to take the leader's jersey of the general classification, taking it off to Damiano Caruso (Italy), who now follows him at 18 seconds. Behind him a very small group was ruled by Pier-André Cotè (Human Powered Health), ahead of Filippo Fiorelli (Bardiani-CSF-Faizanè). For the Croatian this is the first victory as a professional.
The first kilometers are the simplest of the stage and many are trying to take advantage of it to seize the breakaway of the day. This creates a whirlwind of attacks and accelerations that keep the pace high during the very early stages of the race, marked by a continuous and unsuccessful sprint and relaunch. After 16 kilometers Martin Svrcek (Biesse-Carrera), Veljko Stojnic (Team Corratec) and Alessandro Iacchi (Team Qhubeka) manage to gain a few seconds, joined by Fran Miholjevic (CT Friuli) and Matteo Furlan (D'Amico-UM Tools), to which Federico Burchio (Work Service Vitalcare Vega) was added shortly after. Initially new actions start from the group, which keep the attackers close, but the green light soon arrives for these six men, who after 20 kilometers find themselves having a margin of thirty seconds, destined to grow rapidly in the day's climb. Naro's GPM is conquered by Stojnic, Stefano Gandin's teammate who keeps the jersey, while the group passes with a 4'20 "delay. A gap that remains unchanged for a long time, with Bardiani-CSF-Faizanè and Eolo - Kometa to work in the first positions of the group for his fast wheels. After the passage from Caltanissetta the advantage goes back to almost five minutes, and then returns to about 4 minutes at the entrance in the last 100 kilometers of the race. First fugitive to Losing contact, about 30 kilometers ahead, is Furlan, who is not long in being caught up by a group that has returned to a delay of over five minutes, with the Giotti Victoria - Savini Due team taking over operations at the head of the group, but without recovering much ground. In this phase of the race, however, the pace remains low: the wind, in fact, is frontal and slows the march of the fugitives and the group, where the most anticipated teams continue to remain passive. of the last fifty kilometers of the race, within which the advantage of the fugitives returns to under four and a half minutes. When the men of the Mg.K Vis-Color for Peace begin to collaborate in the pursuit, the gap begins to decrease more consistently, decreasing further when the men of the national team, Astana Qazaqstan and the Human Powered Health. At this point all the teams try to move into the first positions of the group so as not to be caught in the queue at the moment of the change of direction that could favor some attack using the wind. kidneys, the group therefore has a delay of only 2'30 ". In the following kilometers the Bardiani-CSF-Faizanè also returns to work in front, bringing the advantage of the fugitives under two minutes 20 kilometers from the end. 5 kilometers later they arrive in front also the men of the Aeolus - Kometa. 12 kilometers from the end, Miholjevic gets rid of his tired escape companions, while two kilometers further on in the group comes the forcing of the men of the national team, with Giovanni Carboni , Nicola Conci and Damiano Caruso who split the group in two. All the men in the standings remained in the lead, as did Fior elli. The Croatian, however, still rides very well and 5 kilometers from the end his advantage is still more than one minute. The great work of the national team, also assisted by the men of Trek-Segafredo, fails to bring the desired results, with Miholjevic presenting himself alone within the last kilometer. In the last hundreds of meters the rider of Team Cycling Friuli slows down to enjoy the victory, but still manages to cross the finish line with a 41 "advantage over the group and snatch the leader's jersey from Caruso.
