2022 Giro di Sicilia Stage 1 Results & Recap
Stage 1 of the 2022 Giro di Sicilia is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.
Race Recap
The Giro di Sicilia 2022 begins in the name of Matteo Malucelli. The standard bearer of the now dissolved Gazprom - Rusvelo, who obviously is also the first leader of the general, won the first goal of the island race in the blue jersey, overtaking Matteo Moschetti in the sprint. Launched from the Trek - Segafredo train, Moschetti started in the lead with a long sprint, but was remounted in the last fifty meters by the Italian national team rider, who when the road cleared slightly managed to give vent to his speed. Completing the podium of the day is enfant du pays Filippo Fiorelli (Bardiani CSF Faizanè), who was unable to get out of the wake of his rivals.
Unlike what usually happens in the stages for sprinters, it takes almost 20 kilometers because the first day escape take off. Gergely Szarka (Giotti Victoria - Savini Due) and Matteo Zurlo (Zalf Désirée Fior) also try to return to them, but they move too late and are unable to recover the almost two minutes late with which they find themselves chasing, ending up by get up. Meanwhile, the seven forwards soon gained ground, reaching a maximum margin of four minutes.
After the Tindari GPM conquered by Gandin, however, the Trek - Segafredo men arrived at the head of the group, who immediately brought the situation under control. After a phase in which the group slows down a bit, the sprinters lose ground again after entering the last 100 kilometers: the gap quickly drops to 1'35 ", and then goes back up for up to two minutes. For many kilometers, therefore, the gap will continue to oscillate between two minutes and a minute and a half, with the fugitives who present themselves with this margin at the tear of Termini Imerese, where the Flying Finish Line is located. to force the pace, while in front Petrelli tries to stretch, followed by Zandri. Too much enthusiasm leads the unfortunate CT Friuli rider to slip into the corners, leaving Zandri alone, but the young Italian rider is reassembled by Ropero, who takes the lead on the TV, diving downhill with an advantage now reduced to 40 seconds compared to the group.
During the descent the fugitives gather together, with the sole exception of Soto, who is caught up by the group once they return to the plain. he the fate of the others is, however, now sealed, with the group getting closer and closer, to the point of picking up Petrelli and Belleri, the last to surrender, five kilometers from the finish line, after having also absorbed Alessandro Monaco (Giotti Victoria Savini Due) who had tried to come out on the break. The various teams organize themselves to keep the captains in front, with Astana Qazaqstan also mingling with the sprinter teams. of the last kilometer to launch Matteo Moschetti. The sprinter from Brianza starts long in the lead, with Matteo Malucelli at the wheel, followed by Filippo Fiorelli, who nevertheless fails to reassemble the others. The head to head is therefore between Moschetti and Malucelli, who in the last 50 meters finds the road more suited to his characteristics, clearly overtaking his rival to go and take the stage and jersey.
