The rolling roads around Bruges and Flanders are set to host one of the most anticipated time trials in recent memory, with a startlist that reads like a who's who of the discipline's finest practitioners. The course itself offers a demanding but not brutal test, rewarding those who can sustain power over a technical and occasionally punishing route, with the flat to mildly undulating terrain suiting pure time trial specialists rather than climbers who have converted their talents to the discipline.
All eyes will inevitably fall on Filippo Ganna, the reigning world champion who has been in imperious form throughout the season. The Italian has demonstrated an almost mechanical consistency on the bike and brings with him the momentum of a man who genuinely believes he cannot be beaten against the clock. His position on the machine is exceptional, and his raw power output is difficult to match in the current peloton.
However, Stefan Küng will be desperate to finally claim the rainbow jersey that has so far eluded him. The Swiss rider has stepped onto the podium at major time trials repeatedly without securing the ultimate prize, and on home roads he would feel considerable pressure alongside genuine expectation. His smooth pedalling style and aerodynamic efficiency make him a constant threat.
Wout van Aert adds another fascinating dimension to the race. The Belgian arrives fresh from a remarkable season in which he has demonstrated a versatility that borders on the supernatural, and performing in front of his home crowd on roads he knows intimately could bring out something special. Remco Evenepoel also enters with ambitions of his own, hungry to prove himself on the biggest stage in front of adoring Belgian supporters.
