Race Recap
Yates wins Tour of the Alps
Simon Yates (Team BikeExchange) sealed the overall win at the Tour of the Alps today after crossing the finish line at the Riva del Garda in no danger of losing his lead to second place Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious) and Alexandr Vlasov (Astana-Premier Tech) rounded out the podium in third.
“It feels really fantastic,” Yates said. “The team did a great job today, controlled it at the start, rode all day, then in final they were fantastic. It was a short day and there wasn’t so much action from the GC but it was still a hard day, with a lot of stress, and with a descent to the finish it’s always nervous.”
Felix Grossschartner (Bora-Hansgrohe) took the stage win on the final day, attacking out of the breakaway on the second time up the finishing circuit’s climb. He soloed to victory, 40 seconds ahead of Nicolas Roche (Team DSM) and Alessandro De Marchi (Israel Start-Up Nation), who finished second and third, respectively,
“It was planned since we messed up a bit on the second stage,” Grossschartner said. “I said, ‘I don’t care, I try every day.’ I was second on the third stage so I’m super happy today I can take the victory for the team. It’s always great to win, every pro cyclist knows it’s really hard to win a race when there are 160 guys fighting for the victory. It’s always special.”
