Carapaz wins stage 5
Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) took victory and the race lead on mountainous stage 5 of the Tour de Suisse, outkicking Jakob Fuglsang (Astana-Premier Tech) in the final metres of the uphill finish in Leukerbad after 171.5km.
"I’m really happy. It’s something we’ve been working on all week. Today we knew it was a special day. We wanted to think about the GC but of course the possibility of winning a stage was there. I managed to do both so I’m very happy. We knew there were a lot of people interested in the general classification. Of course that was a launchpad for us. A lot of people made moves. I made my perfect attack and that was it. We’re here and we came thinking about preparing for the Tour de France. Of course we want to win this race. The main objective is the Tour but if we can be successful in this race that is perfect."
Carapaz now leads Fuglsang by 26 seconds with three stages left. Maximilian Schachmann (BOH) is third at 38 seconds.
“I felt good and today’s stage was hard and long but the profile suited me," Fuglsang said. "The team did a great job. They protected me the whole day, from the first climb onwards. As planned, on the bottom of the final ascent I stayed first with the others and tried then to distanced myself. But when I heard Carapaz was coming I tried to save a little bit of energy as I knew it was going to be a tough battle. I just started the sprint too early, but I moved up to second on the General Classification and there are still some stages to come.”
