Bissegger wins stage 4 of the Tour de Suisse

Stefan Bissegger (EF Education-Nippo) claimed stage 4 of the Tour de Suisse, outsprinting breakaway companions Ben Thomas (Groupama-FDJ) and Joey Rosskopf (Rally Cycling) at the Gstaad airfield after 171km of racing. The trio finished more than five minutes ahead of the peloton when they reached Gstaad, but the general classification was relatively undisturbed with four stages remaining.

“Finally I got a stage win at the Tour de Suisse. I’m really happy with that,” said Bissegger. “I would say this one is nicer (than the Paris Nice win). This was a normal road stage, and the other one was a time trial, so more for specialists. Both are nice but here in Switzerland it’s maybe even a bit nicer.”

“Second place is always frustrating for sure, but I’m still happy with my day,” said Benjamin. “My goal was to go on the break, fight for the win, and win the stage. The contract was pretty much fulfilled, but I have no regrets, I don’t think I made any mistakes in the final. Bissegger was the strongest and he didn’t make any mistakes either, so he won.”

Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) finished safely in the pack to keep the yellow jersey for another day. He still leads the overall 1 second ahead of Julian Alaphilippe (DQT). Third is Stefan Kung at four seconds.
