Van Der Poel wins stage 2

Mathieu Van Der Poel (AFC) won today's stage of the Tour de Suisse from a late attack from the day's breakaway, 3.5km from the line. Van Der Poel convincingly beat Maximilian Schachmann (Bora Hansgrohe), who was the only rider from the break to stay with the Dutchman, and Gino Mader (Bahrain Victorious) took third on the undulating 171km stage from Neuhausen at the Rhine Falls - Lachen.

“It was a super fun stage, especially with the rainy conditions at the end. It looked a bit like a classics parcours, something that suits me very well. The team did an amazing, job making the race hard like I asked. I’m really happy to finish it off!” Van Der Poel said.

Stefan Kung still leads the overall GC by a thread. The Swiss TT champ is a second ahead of Julian Alaphilippe and two seconds ahead of Maximilian Schachmann (BOH).

“It was amazing today at home, on my training roads,” he said. “I had many friends and family on the side of the road. Every two kilometers, I saw someone I knew. It’s the best feeling you can have. The first part of the stage really was in my area. The race was calmer at this point so I had enough time to look at who was there. I couldn’t afford it in the final, where it was full gas!”.

Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) took his fifth victory of the season on stage 2 of the Tour de Suisse. The Dutchman beat Maximilian Schachmann (Bora Hansgrohe) convincingly after the pair escaped in the closing stages to hold off the chase, while Gino Mader (Bahrain Victorious) claimed third.
