Race Recap
Woods wins penultimate stage of Tour de Romandie
After a long, wet and miserable stage of the Tour de Romandie, Michael Woods (Israel Start-up Nation) came out as the victor atop the Thyon 2000 ascent. The Canadian won ahead of Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers), who crashed just before the line to finish third. Ben O'Connor (Ag2r Citroen Team) snuck by the fallen Ineos rider to claim second.
"I just had no feeling whatsoever in my hands," Thomas said. "I tried to change gear, but instead I just lost the bars. It's so frustrating - even if I'd just stayed in that gear and come second. I feel fine (physically), it's more the frustration after such a hard day, to lose time like that at the end. We'll try to make the time back tomorrow. 11 seconds behind - so it's all the play for."
Woods took over the yellow jersey after the mountainous day of racing. He's 11 seconds ahead of Thomas in the overall classification ahead of tomorrow's time trial, a 16.9km course in Fribourg.
I was really happy with the race today, really proud of how the team rode and how my legs felt," Woods said. "The guys just did such a great job in delivering me and Mads got into the breakaway and was able to help position me for the final climb. I had really good legs and, ya, just felt awesome. Didn’t want to take the yellow the way I took it, I didn’t want to see Geraint Thomas go down the way he did, but it’s special to be in a yellow jersey at a WorldTour race. I’m really proud of myself and hopefully, I can land a podium tomorrow.”
