Politt wins in Nîmes

Nils Politt (Bora - Hansgrohe) powered to the biggest win of his career today at the Tour de France after being the last rider out of an initial 13-rider breakaway to last out in front all day. Politt attacked Imanol Erviti (Movistar) and Harry Sweeny (Lotto Soudal), who arrived at the line 31 seconds behind to claim second and third, respectively.

“This is unbelievable. It’s a dream to win a stage at the Tour de France. It was sad that Peter Sagan had to leave. We started the stage directly in the crosswind. I felt better those last few days. There were quite a lot of sprinters in our group, so I had to make the race hard and attack quite early. I made first attack. I gave everything. To finish solo is unbelievable. Cycling is my passion. For my whole family, I spend so much time away from home, it’s the biggest win I could have for them.”

Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) remains the leader of the Tour de France by more than five minutes ahead of Rigoberto Uran.

“My early attack along with Julian Alaphilippe was a great effort for me. I had my rivals for the KOM classification on the back of my mind, and I decided to anticipate my move hoping some riders would bridge across from the bunch on the first climb. In the end, that didn’t happen and, soon after the intermediate sprint, a break went away and I couldn’t make it. Knowing there was a big group ahead and that Ineos was playing for the GC from the bunch, I decided to ease up and save some energy for the upcoming days. I feel well. There will come days on which I will be on the break. Heat doesn’t play against me: I’m used to it.”
