Van der Poel claims stage 5 of Tirreno Adriatico
Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) won stage 5 of Tirreno Adriatico after a long-range attack 52 kilometres from the finish line. Tadej Pogačar (UAE-Team Emirates) finished 10 seconds behind van der Poel for second and Wout van Aert was third.
“I was riding completely on empty in the last few kilometres. I was told that Pogačar was coming close but I wasn't even able to listen. I just wanted to reach the finish as fast as I could," Van der Poel said. "I'm happy with the win. I attacked from far away because I was cold and I felt good until 20km to go.”
Pogacar still leads the overall classification ahead of Van Aert by 1:15. Third is Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious) at three minutes.
