Van Vleuten unstoppable at Tour of Flanders
Annemiek van Vleuten (MOV) won the Tour of Flanders today after attacking on the Paterberg, 14 kilometres from the finish. The European champion finished 17 seconds ahead of Lisa Brennauer (WNT), who won the sprint out of a chase group of seven. Grace Brown (BEX) took third after 152km of racing through the Flemish Ardennes.
"I still can not believe it," van Vleuten said. "It has been many years trying to get the victory again here and today, finally, we have achieved it. I always came super prepared, but I was always on the verge of repeating. Our strategy for today was not to let other teams use numerical superiority to their advantage. That is why we started working early and why I have tested it from so far away. I wanted to try it at the Kanarieberg, but there was a headwind and that made it difficult to open differences, but I think that allowed me to wear them down and make the race at the end more difficult for everyone, which worked in my favor.
“I was so knackered. I really went all out. Eight seconds at the top was not much, I knew I needed more, to get out of sight, because of the long finishing straight.”
