The final major classic of the European road cycling season arrives with Paris-Tours, a race that has long rewarded the pure sprinter and the canny tactician in equal measure. The 2021 edition covers roughly 213 kilometres from Chartres to Tours, rolling through the flat to gently undulating terrain of the Loire Valley, a landscape that deceives with its apparent simplicity before the peloton reaches the crucial final kilometres where positioning and nerve become everything.

Unlike the cobbled monuments and mountain-laden classics of spring, Paris-Tours carries a distinctive late-autumn character. The roads through the Beauce and Touraine regions can be exposed and wind-swept, and crosswinds have historically shattered the peloton into echelons well before the finale, punishing teams caught out of position and elevating the tactically astute to the front of affairs. Race teams will have studied the meteorological forecasts with particular care, knowing that a strong westerly breeze could transform a seemingly routine flat race into an unpredictable split-fest.

The Cotes de la Vallee de Cher and the other short sharp climbs that punctuate the final stretch represent the race's true selective moments. These are not climbs that will drop the sprinters outright, but they are steep enough to test the legs and create gaps for breakaway groups with the courage and fitness to go deep into their reserves.

Expect strong teams with sprinting options to police any dangerous moves while calculated attackers seek to arrive in Tours with a handful of companions and enough room to settle the outcome before the true finisseurs can organize themselves.
