Bennett claims stage 5 of Paris Nice\nBy Clara Beard
Irishman Sam Bennett took advantage of another textbook lead-out from his Deceuninck - Quick-step team to take his second victory at the Paris Nice today. It looked easy for the sprinter, who continues to prove he's one of the best in the world after winning the green jersey at the Tour de France last summer.
"The guys were incredible today, leading all the way in the last two kilometres," Bennett said. "I just got back on the line just before the roundabout. It was a very hard finale, I didn’t think I would hold it to the line. The guys did an incredible job and I’m proud I could finish it off. I don’t know why some guys seem to base their sprint around mine instead of focusing on their own race. Maybe because my team-mates are too strong! I was really happy to get to the first stage and really, really disappointed on the second sprint day. I really wanted to make up for it today. I can’t thank the guys enough. Now I’m going to stay in condition for the end of the race and then Milan-San Remo hopefully."
PrimoĹľ RogliÄŤ (Jumbo-visma) protected his race lead successfully, despite losing an important teammate, Tony Martin, to a crash in the latter part of the 200km flat stage. Roglic also lost a few seconds to defending champion and second overall Maximilian Schachmann (Bora - Hansgrohe), after the German picked up some bonus seconds in the intermediate sprints.
"Luckily all good," the race leader said. "We’re just a little unfortunate because Tony is out but that’s cycling and we go on for tomorrow. I think probably he just hit this plastic thing in front of me on the side of the road and he just went over. We’re not so lucky because Tony is out but me, I’m fine and we have to go on. I feel excited about the last weekend of course. Definitely, we’re going to do the best we can with the whole team and I hope Tony is fine."
