Race Recap
Lafay wins stage 8 of the Giro
Victor Lafay (Cofidis) won stage 8 of the Giro d'italia and stunned the tifosi as he climbed self-assuredly to the top of the Guardia Sanframondi in the Benevento region of southern Italy today. The young French rider broke Cofidis' 11 year streak of zero wins at the Giro, giving the French plenty to celebrate on the eve of the queen stage. Francesco Gavazzi (EOLO-Kometa Cycling Team) had to settle for second place, 36 seconds back on Lafay. Nikias Arndt (Team DSM) are was third. All were part of an original nine-rider breakaway that held off the peloton on the final climb.
“It was a very tough day, to make the breakaway was very difficult,” said Lafay. “But when it was gone, the peloton let us have seven minutes, so we could recover a little. The finish was hard, about a ten-minute effort...I knew that [the others in the break] were not climbers. [Nelson] Oliveira was the best one, so I kept an eye on him. But I was confident with my legs, and I attacked with 3km to go. I don’t believe that I’ve just won!”
Attila Valter (Groupama - FDJ) kept his pink jersey safe for yet another day. That could all change tomorrow, however, when the peloton head to the Abruzzo Appennines for a big day in the mountains.
