Race Recap
Van der Hoorn wins stage 3
Taco van der Hoorn (Intermarché-Wanty-Grobert-Matériaux) took a fantastic solo victory today on stage 3 of the 2021 Giro d’Italia after spending almost the entire 190km off the front with seven other riders. The Dutch rider barely held off a charging peloton that saw Davide Cimolai (Israel Start-Up Nation) outsprint Peter Sagan (Bora – Hansgrohe) for second and third, respectively.
“After the finish, I was thinking: ‘Is this real?’” Van der Hoorn said . “I didn’t believe when we had one minute with 25k. I just think that half-percent it’s enough chance and I just take it.”
Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) remains in the lead of the overall on the maglia rosa's 90th anniversary.
"I think it's the last stage that I will arrive in this amazing jersey," Ganna said. "Tomorrow I'm sure with the climbs I can lose time. Tonight we have three Wolfie (mascots) for Claudio on the bus. Now it's important to recover, as on the last two climbs today I was suffering a lot. The speed on the climbs was very high and we saw a lot of sprinters dropped. In the end I don’t think there were a lot of riders left at the finish line.\n
