Bernal wins the Giro d'Italia, Ganna first in final time stage

Filippo Ganna won the final stage of the Giro d'Italia, a 30.3km time trial into Milan. The world champion set a pace no one could match, winning the race with a time of 0:33:48, 12 seconds ahead of French champion and closest rival, Remi Cavagna. Edoardo Affini ( Jumbo-Visma) was third at 13 seconds off the pace. The stage win wasn't without its drama however. Ganna had a puncture and was forced to have a speedy change, while Cavagna slipped out around one of the technical bends on the course.

"When I saw the puncture, I thought: 'today's unlucky, I've lost the race'. But I know I had a good gap to the second rider. I changed the bike really well, really fast, like a formula one race! And then when I crossed the line I thought: 'OK, now we will wait for Cavagna,' because he's a really good rider and time trialist. When I saw his crash, I thought: 'we have played with the same card, I punctured, he crashed!'," Ganna said about Cavagna's crash.

Egan Bernal had a fantastic final ride to secure his maglia rosa, which he's worn since stage 9 of the Giro. The Colombian lost about 30 seconds to Damiano Caruso, but still won the overall by 1:30. Simon Yates finished third at 4:15.

"I was just focussed on my effort," Bernal said . "I was thinking I can't do a mistake, I don't want to lose the Giro in one corner. I pushed in the parts I could push, so in the corners, I don't have to take any risks. It's the first time trial I actually enjoyed! I'm always suffering in the time trials, but today was a special one. It was special, looking at a lot of Colombian flags everywhere, and people cheering for me."\n
